Okay to mix Topamax and alcohol? Mature answers, is it wise to mix the seizure/migraine medicine Topamax with any sort of alcohol? (as in, you drink it while you're on the medication)

briansnurse replied: "NNNNNOOOOOOOO! Alcohol will kick away the effects of this med, and you will either have your headaches, your seizure threshold will be lowered, or you will spend your night praying to the porcelain god."

Elise replied: "I just started topamax 3 days ago. I am on a 50mg dose. Last night I had 2 beers and I could barely walk. I felt like I had had about 15, and I have a decent tolerance to alcohol. I am sure everyone will react different but if you want to try to drink I recommend trying 1 drink and being at home seeing as I couldn't drive from 2 beers. Also make sure to drink plenty of water since this drug seems to be hard on the kidneys and I dont think alcohol would help the situation."

Can you take topamax & lexapro and safely drink alcohol? okay, so I take Lexapro 10 MG && Topamax 50 MG [twice a day] and they both have warnings that say "WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION, DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES" would drinking while i'm on these really eff me up badly? or would it just make the medicine less effective?

southsiderep4eva replied: "It could possibly do both. The most reasonable possibility is that the combo would make you sick on your stomach."

ѕανє∂ נυℓιєтღ replied: "You can drink with Lexapro but I wouldn't go get plastered. It depends on your mood really, if your mad don't drink hahahaha. You might kill someone! As far as topamax goes I'm not so sure!"

Toxic Rainbow Kisses replied: "Drinking alcohol while on Lexapro is not recommended. This is because if alcohol and Lexapro are taken together, Lexapro may potentially increase the effects of the alcohol. If you choose to drink while taking Lexapro, you should drink only light-to-moderate amounts of alcohol -- one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. Twelve ounces of beer, five ounces of wine, and one ounce of 100-proof spirits all count as one alcoholic drink. You should also make sure not to drink at the same time as you are taking your Lexapro. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ have not had good experiences when I have tried and I am only on 100mg for migraines. It definitely intensifies the effect of the Topamax and i feel completely out of it the next day and I have never been one to be hung over. If I were you I would maybe have one drink and pass on the rest, trust me it is not worth it. Blacked out a majority of the time on minimal drinks. Do not mix!"

Albertan replied: "Drinking alcohol while on Lexapro is not recommended. This is because if alcohol and Lexapro are taken together, Lexapro may potentially increase the effects of the alcohol. You should also make sure not to drink at the same time as you are taking your Lexapro. Taking Topamax may cause drowsiness and problems with concentration. If you are affected do not drive or operate machinery. Drinking alcohol while you are on Topamax is likely to increase any drowsiness you have."

Casey R replied: "Usually if something says "DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES" it means... DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. It's more then likely not the dr getting his jollys off because you can't drink, probably has some "good" side effects when you mix the two."

Mel replied: "Whenever a psychiatric medication is prescribed, its recommended that you don't consume alcohol. Medical companies assume that if you have enough symptoms to be taking medication for depression, bipolar disorder, mania, etc..then bringing alcohol into the equation is not a good idea and may make you more depressed, moody, or manic (whether you're taking medicine of not, alcohol can cause this). Whether someone is medicated or not, depression can be due to the effects of alcohol. As long as you aren't taking topamax for seizures, then it should be okay to drink a little. But you should drink moderately if not at all. Don't get drunk because that could really conflict with the medicine if you consume large quantities of alcohol quickly."

Topamax and alcohol? I have noticed that when I drink 2 or 3 drinks on Topamax I feel extremely nauseous the next morning. This was not typical of me before hand. Once, I have actually gotten sick. This seems to be a side affect of the Topamax and for obvious reason I will not be having any drinks. However, I was just curious if anyone else has experienced this?

Jodi L replied: "Well....I researched this for you and found that nausea and vomiting is a side effect of the medication. I know that in some instances alcohol somehow makes certain drugs more potent. Maybe that's what's happening. Good luck."

Topamax mixed with alcohol? what happens if you mix with alcohol? i need to know... like now!!!

jals2113 replied: "Topomax with alcohol isn't too bad. It will increase the side effects of topamax but nothing fatal if u didn't take lethal amounts of topomax and alcohol. Here's a site that will tell u more about it: good luck"

Is it safe to take Tylenol PM with Topamax? I just started taking Topamax, is it safe for me to take the recomended dosage of Tylonol PM? This is the information i got on the website- "Topamax may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines, pain relievers, sedative (sleep aids), anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants. Dangerous sedation, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur if Topamax is taken with any of these medications." So, if i take the recomended dose of 2 tablets, will i be safe? I am not alone, so if something goes wrong I have people with me. My local pharmacy is closed so i cannot call them, so somone should call their local pharmacy for me and let me know hehe Serious answers please, this is a medical question after all, and i dont want to die, =) thank-you Michele, i've taken Tylenol PM before, but i havent taken it since i've started the Topamax, because im uber paranoid. Thanks :)

michele replied: "The two are not contraindicated. You were wise to read the warnings, though. No worries. Barring some bizarre allergy to acetominiphin or diphenhydramine, you'll be just fine (sleepy, but fine). Hope you can get some sleep, ~M~"

Topamax used as a medication for migraines? Ive just been prescribed topamax for migraines by a neurologist in my local hospital. Ive been taking it just over a week now and my christmas party is coming up and im wondering is ok to drink while on this medication. Ive checked the internet and all i could find was "avoid alcohol" but that doesn't actually give me a defiinite yes or no answer. I asked my chemist about it and she sed if i knew i was going to be drinkin a few days in advance i could stop taking the topamax and it wouldnt be a huge deal and then just restart them afterwards. But i really dont want to do that! Id rather no 1) if i drink am i going to be violently ill or die as a result of drinking while on this medication or 2) its not really going to make much of a difference just be a little more careful and not drink as much. I mean im not a huge drinker anyways. I very rarely drink but with the christmas season approaching i would have the odd drink. Could anyone give me an insight? other than avoid alcohol???? Sorry a detail that might be useful to no is that i started off on 25mg once a day and now im taking 25mg twice a day (1 in morning and 1 in the night) and by next week i'll be on 25 mg 4 times a day (2 in the morning and 2 in the night) and that will be my dosage for a year. I mean i no fun can be had without drink but i do like the occasional drink and sitting there not drinking when everyone around me is, well to be honest that kinda kills me. I like to have the option to have a drink or not and chose not to drink, rather than be told i cant.....

Paula M replied: "I was on Topomax for several years. I recently stopped taking it because of problems with short term memory loss, which can be a side effect of taking it. Although the drug labels warn you to not drink alcohol while taking the medication, I would have the occassional glass or two of wine. As long as you eat while you are drinking, you should be fine."

natmac replied: "Hi there! I've been on Topamax for the same reason for 2 years now, and I'm nearly on the top dosage....I did try drinking on it...and seriously I would avoid it completely! It made me really sick! And for the chemist to say stop taking it and drink and start taking it again afterwards, is just stupid....as the drug actually stays in your system for a few days after you stop taking it. Topamax is a drug that should not just be stopped as it can cause withdrawal migraines if its not reduced slowly and tapered off. Please don't just stop taking it, as you won't be attending your party anyway as you will be in bed with a Migraine!!! I have got used to life on Topamax and a good time can be had without a drink! Have fun! x"

boobookittyfck37 replied: "Call your local drugstore or pharmacy (cvs, right aid, etc...) the pharmacists are usually more than happy to answer questions like yours."

bodmodangel replied: "Id rather no 1) if i drink am i going to be violently ill or die as a result of drinking while on this medication --Yes, it will make you MUCH more sensitive to alcohol. 2) its not really going to make much of a difference just be a little more careful and not drink as much. --Yes; it is going to make a difference. It is dangerous to drink on this medication (I was on Topamax for about 7 months for nerve damage, but it made me have horrible migraines)"

Erika replied: "I was on 150mg of Topamax and I drank on it. My doctor at the time told me that it was okay to have 1 or 2 but there were days when I would have 3 or 4. I know that I usually feel worse when I drink on my medications. Coming down from the buzz of it sucks and I feel a little more intoxicated than I normally would. I tend to get drunk faster and getting sober takes longer. That's just my own experience. I have actually chosen not to drink at all because of this. I think you will be fine to have a drink or two but I think if you are going to be drinking at night then skip that nights dose. You can also call your local pharmacy."

How does alcohol interact with my medications and what should I do when I want to drink? I have bipolar type II. I take Cymbalta 90mg, Topamax 50mg 2x daily (I believe...don't have it on me), and Abilify 30mg. I also take Klonopin .5mg as a PRN for anxiety. How would these meds specifically interact with alcohol, and what should I do if I want to drink? Skip them, or skip the drink? I'm not an alcoholic, but I am part Italian. I like my wind, and I'm a responsible drinker... I just want to know.

rokaround replied: "Those meds Don't mix with Booze makes you crazy Nutty Not good"

Richard L replied: "Call ask a nurse or your doctor, don't trust something this important to a random person on yahoo answers! perhaps it's ok to skip your meds once in a while but definitely ask somebody who knows what they are talking about. Even Tylenol interacts badly with liquor so be careful!"

TheClubbman replied: "You will seriously fuck up your life if you drink with those meds. Not kidding, when they say you don't drink with your medication, you don't drink. Period."

Lover of Life replied: "I'm pretty sure those meds say not to be taken with alcohol, and to not skip taking it or to consult with a physician if you stop taking it. If you feel you have to drink every once in a while, if it were me (and I"m not a doctor so this is my opinion) I'd skip the meds for a day so they are not as strong in my body but don't do it more than 1 day in a row."

Joe replied: "I wouldn't drink with any medications. If you really feel like you need to do something smoke weed, its safer and won't interact with your medications, at least not physically."

Pal replied: "Alcohol can enhance or interfere with different types of drugs. Considering that you are bipolar which is serious I would forget alcohol for a while until you have been on your meds long enough to make sure how well they are working. Then the occasional, single glass of wine should be OK but don't take chances with driving or making decisions until you know how it will effect you."

kt replied: "Honestly, my suggestion would be to speak with a pharmacist. I see no problem with going to a pharmacy and asking that very question because every time we get medication, we're required to sign a document saying if we have questions about our medicine. Be sure to bring all of your prescriptions with you so that the pharmacist can see the dosage, etc. I wouldn't wait until it's time to refill your prescriptions, either so that you know immediately and aren't tempted to have a glass of wine before knowing. It is very important that you speak with a professional about this because all that any of us could provide is a guess in this, a possibly life or death situation. You want to make sure that the person that gives you this information is a licensed professional, and the only way to know that is to go to the pharmacy."

roscoedeadbeat replied: "Cymbalta =f you drink alcohol frequently and on regular basis, should you be worried about liver injury. This is why alcoholics are not prescribed this drug. Topamax = Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of Topamax, and can also increase the risk of a seizure. Abilify = While taking ABILIFY, avoid: * Drinking alcohol * Breast-feeding an infant Klonopin = It is not recommended to mix alcohol and Klonopin due to the potentially serious reactions that may occur."

AbeLincolnParty replied: "Rule of thumb: mixing two drugs with liver toxic potential is a bad idea. Cymbalta carries significant liver toxic potential, so does alcohol. Cymbalta is Lilly's answer to the loss of their Prozac patent, there are many other SSRI drugs that are not as liver toxic as Cymbalta. Abilfy is an extention of antipsychotics into the bipolar market, it has no real justification other than profit motive. It promotes weight gain and diabetes. Many people get the bipolar label just because the therapist and drug companies need long term customers. Maybe you actually are bipolar or maybe you are accepting of this label as some title/identity because you lack the confidence to earn one that takes real work to achieve. Long term use of Klonopin can result in addiction and seizure if withdrawn too quickly. If you get eye pain while on topamax keep in mind it can cause glaucoma that can result in blindness. Give up the alcohol and focus on doing something postive with your time. Whatever you do: study, study, study."

Does Anyone Take Topamax? Im taking it because I get dizzy at dance so badly that I get sick for a really long time. One of the side affects is dizzyness I noticed? Am i the only one. Does anyone else get tingly hands or fingertips? Also, is it lethal to drink alcohol with this in your system? Like what if I wanted to hangout with my friends?

Shae H replied: "it will counter act the medications"

debbie d replied: "i think they could pro bally kill you in the long run, i take topamax, it Wwas prescribed to me for possible seizures, its a very addictive drug, and very hard to get off of if ever.but mixing alcohol with any drugs is very bad, someone has a death wish if they choose to do this. i just lost a friend last year who was taking depression medication and drinking alcohol, jack Daniels and coke, she just never woke up one morning, the doctors said her heart gave out, so if this is a friend of yours, put an end to her doing this, or get ready for a funeral soon, its not a nice thing to see a friend do. help her hurry!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i wish you all the best and god bless you"
