How many different diseases does penicillin treat? what is a relative number of how many diseases penicillin can be used to treat or cure?

kakakos replied: "Some infections not diseases."

namairb2 replied: "Penicillin can help many staph infections. It is not a cure for any diseases though. Hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless"

inzanium replied: "Penicillin is used to treat primary strep infections, syphillis, and a few other gram positive infections. Due to increasing resistance, it is NOT used for staph infections."

What was the anti-bacterial treatment available before penicillin was used? What did people in the old times or ancient time or even the early 1900s before penicillin was discovered use to treat bacteria infections and how effective was it?

Randy K replied: "Sulfa powder was used extensively and other things such as herbal medicines and silver. The most important change in infection control was the advent of handwashing."

Rockford replied: "Bloodletting was very popular treatment for different diseases. They thought if you had a fever, you needed to drain blood to keep the body in balance. It's how the medical journal Lancet got its name. They used a lancet to do the cutting."

MommaDoo replied: "Good old soap and water. Still the best today. They also had alcohol."

JL replied: "Egyptians understood the importance of a good diet, and maintaining health. They used treatments based on spiritual beliefs to heal. Romans understood the importance of fresh water, and good hygiene for public health. They developed public baths and toilets. Even sewers to carry waste away. In the early days I guess herbal medicines wold have been used. Florence Nightingale :) changed all of this after the crimean war, with her book notes on nursing. It was all about how to prevent the spread of infection. It was amazing for it's time I guess. It also gave nurse's a good name."

Can penicillin be used to treat UTI's? and How often can penicillin be used before it becomes ineffective? I'm wondering, because my dentist/oral surgeon prescribed it for me before my wisdom teeth came out, as they were infected. It really helped. It's been about 2 months, and that area should have been healed by now, but I'm beginning to have pains again. Also, I feel as if I'm getting a UTI. I've been getting pains in my abdomen, but also in the kidney area the way I did when I had a UTI that turned into a kidney infection. So I'm thinking that I may need a "multipurpose" antibiotic. if I take the bottle of penicillin that was extra, will it kill both bacteria or will it be too close to the last dose to be effective? Thank you :) Well, I happen to have a whole big bottle of penicillin, so I thought I'd ask just in case I could get away with using it, since my doc is out of office till Monday. Thanks, PaxAmerica :) I shouldn't be so embarrassed. It's just that I have so many issues, that my immune system is just a little run down or so it seems, because I've had 3 infections before and after the wisdom teeth were removed and I keep having to go back there. Over and over. It's a pain, and it makes them think I'm not taking care of the surgical site, but I am. So I guess I was hoping I wouldn't have to go back again. I've been getting awful pains in the jaw area, and all of a sudden, I feel it in my eyes. Sleepy like, and they're puffy and slightly crusty. And I've been getting sinus headaches and pain in my head like a head cold but not. It's scaring me, because I'm thinking I have an infection running through me and my dentist/oral surgeon won't be back till Tuesday, so I guess I was just hoping I could self medicate to nip it in the bud. Problem is, I have reoccuring kidney infections and UTI's, and I've been feeling one coming on. Ughhh.... :(

John de Witt replied: "It isn't that it's too close to the last use. The problem is that urinary infections are caused by germs that almost never are treatable using penicillin. The bacteria you'd expect from a particular kind of infection must be matched to the activity spectrum of the antibiotic chosen. That's why it's smart guys with letters behind their names that pick what antibiotics to use for what."

PaxAmericana replied: "I wouldn't recommend using any antibiotic without first talking to your doctor, especially if you've had UTI's before that turned into a kidney infection. It's not that there's a limit to the number of times you can take penicillin, it's that you might be infected with a bacteria that is immune to penicillin (for example, there are Methycillin-Resistant strains of Staphylococcus Aureus, which can kill kids & old ppl and are really hard to get rid of all because ppl used too much methycillin so the bacteria that were immune to methycillin were able to reproduce better than those that weren't, and now we have to use numerous antibiotics in conjunction to treat an infection that 50 years ago 1 antibiotic would wipe out entirely). In sum, don't add to the problem: go see your doctor & get a new prescription."

scrabbleaims replied: "There are better drugs to treat UTI's than PEN. Talk to your Dr."

How did people treat treat cuts and wounds before antibiotics or penicillin been invented? I blood poisoning or a cut became septic how did people use to treat it?

bigwetmonkey replied: "The ancient Egyptians used honey."

Jenn1980 replied: "I heard they used leaches as nasty as that sounds.Alot of people also died back then before antibiotics and penicillin were created.Technology has come a long way thank goodness!"

Insightâ„¢ replied: "My grandad used leaves and different juices from plants once when I cut my leg. It healed really well, when I went to see the doctor once i flew back home he was quite impressed, but i guess things going septic back in them days was a regular thing."

Amithji replied: "simple In ancient India they used leaves of Herbs. Even now they r used by MNC pharma companies. Ayurveda an ancient science of medicine in India."

balji s replied: "by ash by their own urine"

John de Witt replied: "Acutely, wound care really isn't about antibiotics. The best way to kill germs, as one of my surgical professors drilled into me, is to drown them. Cleansing a wound makes all the difference in whether it gets infected. Also, in the pre-antibiotic era, people were less likely to enclose foreign material inside a wound. Suture material is a foreign body, and leaving a contaminated wound open to air is a good tactic to avoid an infection. These days, antibiotics have given us a false sense of security regarding wound infections, so we're likely to suture closed a wound that would better be left open. When wounds do become infected, it's usually a local process, and warm compresses to increase blood flow to the area (and thereby increase the local immune response: think about all those white blood cells!) is probably at least as important as antibiotics. When systemic infections did occur, a lot of people died who would be easy enough to treat now, but that's a relatively small percentage of the overall cases. And even there, a good immune response gave a fighting chance."

galloppal replied: "Honey and other similar plant and animal substances were used. Maggots were used to debride dead and infected tissue, and leaches were used to reduce blood volume. Septicemia was a death sentence. Antibiotics have saved many thousands of lives that would not have been saved prior to antibiotics. Before they were discovered, even minor infections were life-threatening. This is why antibiotic resistance poses such a huge threat.....with infection by organisms like mrsa, what used to be curable with a simple round of antibiotics is now, like in the past, a life threatening infection."

How does Penicillin cure so much? Penicillin is a widely used antibiotic to treat many infections. How does one drug cure so much?

Nick P replied: "because it kills infections and most problems are caused by infections"

CJ replied: "Penicillin works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial cell walls. Humans don't have cell walls or use peptidoglycan (the primary component of cell walls) so we are not harmed by penicillin (with the exception of side effects of course)."

Zeep replied: "Penicillin cures a lot less than it used to, and for most infections there are better drugs - not that penicillin doesn't remain the drug of choice for some infections, like syphilis. A lot of antibiotics are more specific. Macrolides only affect gram-positive bacteria. Aminoglycosides only affect aerobic gram-negative bacteria. Metronidazole only affects anaerobic bacteria. But penicillin is able to kill many gram-positive, gram-negative, aerobic, and anaerobic bacteria. It thus has a broader spectrum than many antibiotics (and a less broad spectrum than others)."

What happens when you take penicillin without a need for it? I used to get strep throat a lot when I was younger. I haven't had it in a few years now, but I'm pretty sure I have it right now. My tonsils are all white and huts like crazy. I'm pretty sure of the routine...see the doctor, get throat culture, get penicillin. My question is, what if I DON'T have strep? What happens if I take penicillin with nothing to treat? What danger is there when doing something like this?

americanfreeman replied: "There is no immediate danger, but you will build up an immunity to it and will need stronger and strong drugs to work. Not a good idea to do that. See a doctor."

TweetyBird replied: "Nothing terrible would happen. You might have some adverse effects from the med but that's about all. It would just be a waste of time. If your routine includes a culture, you should know that the entire test is a culture and sensitivity. The culture identifies the organism and the sensitivity gives a list of antibiotics that the organism is susceptible to. If penicillin, or any of the antibiotics belonging to the penicillin family, aren't on that list, your doctor won't prescribe it. It's as simple as that."

dwaraka n replied: "your idea is very narrow ---since the antibiotic penicillin not only act on The sterpt but also wide varieties organism --in any case the penicillin may not have full effect on the required organism but also to prevent it attaching the organs, also, you know to prevent the strepto infection of heart the patient is asked to take the penicillin for a long time may be up to 21 years of life"

RayeKaye replied: "If you see your doctor, he or she will probably do an in-office strep test. If it's positive, they'll give you antibiotics. If it's not, they'll tell you what is causing the sore throat. Taking antibiotics when you don't need them is pointless. So is not taking the entire prescribed dose when you DO need them. In the second case, only the weak bacteria are killed off, and the strong ones survive to infect someone else with a resistant strain, which means that person has to take something ELSE to kill the bacteria. That's why researchers have to keep coming up with newer, stronger antibiotics."

mdsnurse60 replied: "It's isoniazid....it's usually a one year therapy that's usually taken three times weekly....then a follow up chest xray is still required at the end of the therapy to be deemed disease free."

bonstermonster20 replied: "e. penicillin is used for everything, but not tuberculosis."

dna replied: "isoniazid"

W W D replied: "INH, or isoniazid, is a standard part of just about every cocktail for TB. Streptomycin, an aminoglycoside, has been used but isn't often."
